Chapter Eight
Gabe closed his computer with a slam. The picture that one of his younger cousins who lived in New York had sent of his mom partying it up at a charity dinner in the city showed her with a glass that Gabe would bet his entire fortune was filled with something alcoholic.
His mom should have already set up and attended her first appointment with the doctor Gabe had found, and Gabe knew for a fact she shouldn't be drinking if she'd started the program. So that meant either she'd gone and decided not to follow the doctor's instructions or she'd never gone. Neither was okay. She'd made a promise to Gabe. And even as Gabe ached to behave like the child in their relationship just once, this wasn't the time for him to take a backseat. Gabe had to make his mother follow through. For her health.
He knew that his mom was expecting another payment in a few days, and Gabe decided it was time to break the news that the money would no longer be coming. Not until she cared enough about herself to take care of her well-being. Gabe knew his mother's drinking went way beyond a physical problem. She'd always drunk to escape emotional and mental pain, and until she addressed those issues, she'd never be okay. That was all Gabe wanted for his mom. For her to be okay. And hopefully, one day, more than okay.
But she wouldn't do it if life continued in the same vein. And the only thing that Gabe knew would cause her to stop and reflect was the money stream ending.
But even as he knew it was the only solution, he hated that he was using money to get what he wanted. Gabe had always promised himself that wasn't what his inheritance was for. He had always planned on taking care of those he loved and those who needed it. He gave millions to his favorite charities every year, and it just felt wrong to not take care of his mother. Especially when it was so easy for him to do so. But that was just it. He couldn't take the easy way any longer.
He thought about what Lei and her sister were enduring, thanks to Ty's decisions. Lei was right. Until Maile took a stand, nothing would change. The same could be said for him. But he hadn't been ready to take his stand. Until today.
And it wasn't going to be pretty.
He gathered what information he could and bit the bullet. The time had come to make the call. Gabe dialed and it went to his mom's voicemail, just like he’d assumed it would. She didn't tend to answer his calls unless she needed him. Gabe had tried not to let that affect him. He'd always told himself that was the way his mom was. It wasn't right; it just was what it was. But it didn't make it sting any less. He knew moms weren't perfect, but he just wished his would appear to care for him as much as he cared for her.
